Freedom Wheelchair Skills training teaches you how to overcome the everyday challenges that you will encounter when using a wheelchair. It increases your confidence and empowers you to become less dependent on other people.
Types of Training.
As a manual wheelchair user, you can learn basic and advanced skills depending on an individual’s ability*. For those needing more support in using their wheelchair at home, check out the ‘Essential Everyday Wheelchair Skills‘ link below.
Assessment Call.
To gain the most from the training, a free assessment takes place. This assessment can be with you, the client, or someone who knows you well. This could be a professional, like a physio, case manager, or family member. The assessment is a series of questions discussing your individual needs, goals, and abilities in a discussion-based format, so it doesn’t feel too formal. The information obtained from the discussion is used to aid in planning the training. It is also a chance to help with introductions, saving time on the day. Please allow 30 to 40 minutes for this to be a relaxed discussion. Assessment calls can be conducted traditionally by audio call or by video call.
You Can.
Freedom wheelchair skills training will teach you how to manage using your wheelchair over different obstacles you encounter when wheeling along and creating independence. Undulating terrain, kerbs, slopes, and dodging members of the public can all hinder progress if you are not confident in your ability to control these challenges.
*subject to individual abilities.
